PARAMEDIC STUDENT INTERN
Please call to verify that a completed and signed contract between the paramedic training program and the ALS provider interning the student is on file
with the EMS Agency prior to beginning internship.  If a contract cannot be verified proof of insurance coverage must be provided by the student intern.

Candidates for internship in San Luis Obispo County shall demonstrate eligibility and shall apply in person to the EMS Agency.  Candidates shall complete
the EMS Agency
student intern application accompanied by the following items:
  • Proof of eligibility for internship signed by the paramedic program director.
  • A letter from the San Luis Obispo County ALS provider accepting intern.
  • Possess valid government issued photo identification.
  • Current CPR certification
  • Current ACLS certification'
  • Current EMT certification issued within the State of California.

All internship candidates are required to successfully pass a supervised internship as specified in Title 22 and complete local policy requirements.  Interns
are required to have the following items documented and reported to the EMS Agency upon completion of internship:
  • A San Luis Obispo County Field Training Officer (FTO) conducted orientation to the San Luis Obispo County EMS system policies and protocols.
  • Demonstration to FTO of all San Luis Obispo County expanded scope of practice skills and procedures.
  • Pass an FTO administered EMS Agency competency-based written examination to test their knowledge of local EMT-P optional scope of practice
    and protocols with a score of 80% or better.
Upon completion of internship the FTO evaluation verification reports shall be submitted to the EMS Agency on EMS Agency approved forms.

Candidates shall leave sufficient time for processing applications.  The San Luis Obispo County EMS Agency may require up to fourteen calendar days to
process completed applications.

INITIAL ACCREDITATION
Requirements:
Possess a current and valid California Paramedic License
Be employed as a Paramedic with a designated ALS service
provider in San Luis Obispo County.
       Sample Employer Letter
Possess a current and valid CPR card, according to the
standards of the American Heart Association, American Red
Cross or EMS Agency approved provider.
Possess a current and valid ACLS card issued by the American
Heart Association or EMS Agency approved provider.
Successfully complete the San Luis Obispo County EMS
Orientation and Optional Scope Skills Session provided by the
provider agency and approved by the EMS Agency.
Complete a supervised field evaluation.
Complete a San Luis Obispo County Paramedic Accreditation
Application
Possess valid government photo identification.
Pay the established non-refundable accreditation fee.
Accreditation to practice in San Luis Obispo County shall be continuous
as long as:
  • State Paramedic License is maintained.
  • Employment as a Paramedic with a designated San Luis Obispo
    County ALS service provider is maintained. Sample Employer

  • A current and valid APR card and verification of skills competency
    is completed every two years.
  • Complete a San Luis Obispo County Accreditation Application
  • Attendance of 6 San Luis Obispo County Base Hospital Meetings
    during the predceeding 2 years.
  • Completion of a minimum of two (2) intubations every six months (8
    during the two year accreditation period).
  • Documentation that the above requirements to maintain
    accreditation have been met must be submitted, by email, fax, mail
    or in person with an application prior to expiration of the
    Paramedic's license.
